Florida’s ‘Heartbeat Law’ Leads to 23,000 Births, Reinforcing State’s Pro-Life Stance
Florida’s “Heartbeat Protection Act,” a cornerstone of the state’s robust pro-life legislation, has significantly impacted the number of births in the state. Since its enactment, the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration reports that over 23,000 babies have been born who might otherwise have been aborted. This surge in births comes after the implementation of the law which Governor Ron DeSantis signed in 2023, positioning Florida as one of the nation’s most pro-life states.
The “Heartbeat Law” stipulates that the protection of unborn babies begins once their heartbeat is detectable, typically between six to eight weeks of gestation. The legislation not only aims to protect the unborn but also extends substantial support to expectant mothers and families. It mandates that a pregnant woman be offered the chance to view an ultrasound and includes a 24-hour reflection period (except in emergencies) to ensure informed consent. Notably, the law encompasses exceptions for rape, incest, and human trafficking, provided these circumstances are officially documented.
This law coincides with Florida’s 15-week abortion ban, which also includes provisions to protect the life of the mother in cases such as ectopic pregnancies, fatal fetal abnormalities, or significant risks of physical impairment to the woman. These measures collectively underscore the state’s commitment to both maternal and infant health.
Florida’s legal stance on abortion underwent significant judicial scrutiny, culminating in a 6-1 Florida Supreme Court ruling that the state constitution does not guarantee a right to abortion. This decision bolstered the implementation of the “Heartbeat Protection Act.”
The introduction of these laws has altered Florida’s status as a previously sought-after destination for abortions in the Southern United States. According to Liberty Counsel, a non-profit legal organization, the number of non-resident abortions has decreased by almost 51% since the law took effect in May 2024. Mat Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel, remarked on the legislation’s impact, noting that “the news of fewer abortions in Florida…is evident that pro-life laws are saving lives and protecting women.”
In addition to legal measures, the state has allocated $30 million in recurring funds to aid pregnant women and their families, providing essential items such as clothing, cribs, and car seats. This comprehensive approach demonstrates Florida’s ongoing commitment to fostering a supportive environment for families, affirming the state’s dedication to life from conception onward.

Marine Combat Veteran Congressman Champions New Mental Health Treatment Approach
Faith Facts
- Rep. Jack Bergman, R-Mich., the highest-ranking combat veteran in Congressional history, participated in a Capitol Hill event examining psychedelic medicines for mental health treatment
- The discussion reflects growing interest in alternative treatments for veterans suffering from PTSD and other service-related mental health challenges
- This exploration represents a bipartisan effort to address the mental health crisis affecting American servicemembers and veterans
A senior Republican congressman with distinguished military service is lending his voice to an emerging conversation about innovative approaches to treating mental health conditions affecting America’s veterans. Rep. Jack Bergman of Michigan, who holds the distinction of being the highest-ranking combat veteran ever to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives, participated in a Tuesday morning Capitol Hill event focused on the therapeutic potential of psychedelic medicines.
The event signals a significant shift in how lawmakers are approaching the mental health crisis among veterans and active-duty servicemembers. Bergman’s involvement brings considerable credibility to the discussion, given his extensive military background and firsthand understanding of the challenges faced by those who have served in combat.
The exploration of psychedelic medicines for therapeutic purposes represents a departure from traditional treatment protocols. However, proponents argue that conventional approaches have left many veterans without adequate relief from conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), treatment-resistant depression, and other service-related mental health challenges.
This development comes at a critical time when veteran suicide rates remain alarmingly high, and many families continue to grapple with the devastating effects of untreated or inadequately treated mental health conditions. The search for effective treatments aligns with Christian values of compassion, healing, and caring for those who have sacrificed for our nation’s freedom.
Bergman’s participation in the discussion reflects a broader bipartisan interest in exploring all viable options to address the mental health needs of America’s military community. His military experience and current legislative role position him uniquely to bridge the gap between research, policy, and practical implementation.
The Tuesday event underscores the importance of continuing research into treatments that may offer hope to veterans who have exhausted traditional options. While questions remain about safety, efficacy, and regulatory frameworks, the willingness of respected leaders like Bergman to engage with the topic demonstrates the urgency of finding solutions for our nation’s heroes.
