Why This International Day Should Matter to Every American Christian
Faith Facts
- August 22 marks the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief
- Christians in Nigeria continue to face deadly persecution, with thousands killed and displaced for their faith
- The day calls believers worldwide to prayer and action for persecuted Christians and religious minorities
Every year on August 22, the world pauses to recognize a solemn truth many would prefer to ignore: believers around the globe are suffering and dying simply because of their faith. This International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief serves as a stark reminder that religious freedom remains under assault in many corners of the world.
Nigeria stands as one of the most dangerous places on earth to be a Christian. Believers there have endured horrific violence, with entire communities destroyed, families torn apart, and countless lives lost. The persecution continues with relentless brutality, yet it receives far too little attention from Western media and government leaders.
This day of remembrance encompasses all who have suffered for their beliefs—those who have been martyred for their faith, families who have lost loved ones to religious violence, communities left displaced and homeless, individuals still missing and unaccounted for, and survivors struggling to rebuild shattered lives.
For American Christians living in freedom, this observance carries special significance. While we enjoy constitutional protections and the liberty to worship openly, our brothers and sisters in Christ face daily threats simply for gathering in Jesus’ name. Their courage and steadfast faith in the face of persecution should humble and inspire us.
Remembrance alone, however meaningful, is not enough. This day must move us beyond awareness to tangible action. Prayer remains our most powerful weapon, but it must be coupled with advocacy, support for persecuted communities, and pressure on our own government to prioritize religious freedom in foreign policy.
The suffering of Nigerian Christians and other persecuted believers worldwide deserves more than our occasional attention. It demands our sustained commitment, our voices raised in their defense, and our resources directed toward their protection and relief. As members of the global body of Christ, we cannot turn away from their pain.
This August 22, let us honor the victims of religious persecution not just with moments of silence, but with renewed dedication to defending religious liberty everywhere. Let us pray fervently for those under threat. And let us act decisively to ensure that faith never becomes a death sentence.

Taiwanese Folk Believers Find True Belonging in Christ
Faith Facts
- Spirit mediums in Taiwan commonly practice transactional worship, promising favors in exchange for gifts or vows.
- The God of the Bible rejects bargaining and instead offers relationship and belonging.
- Many former folk religion practitioners are discovering that faith in Christ fulfills their need for genuine connection.
Across Taiwan, spirit mediums continue to earn their living by claiming to speak with unseen powers. Families often turn to these mediums when they want health, prosperity, or protection. The pattern is familiar: a worshiper brings a gift or makes a vow, expecting a favor in return.
Scripture presents a different picture. God does not barter blessings for offerings. He already owns everything and requires nothing from His people. Yet in His grace, He invites believers into a relationship that meets their deepest need.
“But the God of the Bible isn’t interested in transactional religion,” the report notes. “He needs nothing from us, yet we need everything from him.”
This truth is reshaping lives. Former practitioners of folk religion are leaving behind cycles of bargaining and discovering what it means to belong to the living God. Instead of negotiating for temporary help, they are finding lasting peace through faith in Jesus Christ.

Manchester City Scandal Exposes the Danger of Making Victory an Idol
Faith Facts
- Graham Daniels of Christians in Sport warns that the Manchester City scandal reveals how easily winning can become an idol.
- Daniels notes the same temptation faces Christian leaders, not just athletes, when success overshadows obedience to God.
- He calls believers to root their identity in Christ rather than victories, titles, or public acclaim.
Manchester City’s financial scandal has shaken the world of English football, raising serious questions about how far clubs will go to secure trophies.
Christians in Sport director Graham Daniels says the controversy should prompt believers everywhere to examine whether the pursuit of success has become an idol in their own lives.
“It’s a temptation facing Christian leaders just as much as sports stars,” Daniels warns, “and a reminder that our identity must rest in something greater than the scoreboard.”
The Premier League champions stand accused of 115 alleged breaches of financial rules spanning more than a decade, including hidden payments and misleading accounts.
Daniels argues that when winning becomes the ultimate goal, moral compromise often follows, whether on the pitch or in the pulpit.
“Our identity must rest in something,” he stresses, urging Christians to anchor their worth in their relationship with Christ instead of titles or public praise.
The scandal has renewed calls for stricter oversight in football and has reignited debates about the culture of relentless success that dominates modern sport.
Daniels encourages pastors and ministry leaders to resist the same pressure, reminding them that faithfulness matters more than visible results.
