Survey Reveals Division on Bible’s Accuracy

Americans differ greatly when it comes to trust in Scripture, as seen in a new report by the American Bible Society. For faithful believers, the Bible stands as the unchanging, God-breathed truth that transforms lives and anchors souls.
“A half-century ago, Americans generally trusted the Bible. Attitudes are more complex these days,” said John Farquhar Plake, chief innovation officer at the American Bible Society.
Most practicing Christians embrace the Bible’s authority, with nearly nine out of ten upholding its total accuracy. Cultural trends and secular skepticism continue to challenge foundational trust in the Word throughout society.
About 24% of Americans see the Bible as just another book with human advice, while 18% even claim it was written to control people. Despite this, a majority—58%—share that the Bible’s message has changed their lives.
“Our latest survey finds a mixture of belief and questioning in the American public,” Plake noted. “It’s true that nearly one in five Americans think the Bible was written to control and manipulate, but twice that many trust the Bible as ‘totally accurate in all the principles it presents.'”
The study also shows Americans tend to trust families more (2.4/4 average score) than religion (1.8/4), but trust in churches remains higher than in government or media. Scripture-engaged individuals are consistently more trusting in both family and the Bible.

Believers are challenged to model transparency, fairness, and accountability while recognizing that digital tools can never replace Spirit-led, personal gospel witness.
“The gospel remains unchanged. Biblical commands transcend technological innovation and demand faithful proclamation, regardless of medium.”
It remains vital that evangelism expresses Christ’s love through genuine presence, as only human ambassadors can fulfill the Great Commission’s relational call.
“While AI may augment, it must always serve, not supplant, the spirit-filled human herald in proclaiming the good news and fulfilling the Great Commission.”
The church must move forward with courage and prayer, trusting God’s mission will not falter in the digital age.

The WCC stands in solidarity with the people of Tanzania, supporting faith-driven calls for peace, dialogue, and justice, and affirming the vital contributions of Christian organizations in seeking reconciliation.
