Graffiti Exhibit at Canterbury Cathedral Sparks Controversy

Published

on

Faith Facts

  • Canterbury Cathedral, founded over 1,400 years ago, is the seat of the Anglican Archbishop of Canterbury.
  • A temporary art exhibit with graffiti questioning God’s goodness faced backlash from believers and public figures.
  • Debate surrounding the exhibit reflects tensions between modern expressions and Christian faith traditions.

Canterbury Cathedral stands as a cornerstone of English Christianity and heritage, founded by Augustine in A.D. 597.

Recently, a controversial art project titled “Hear Us” placed graffiti stickers inside the cathedral, provoking discussions about faith and respect for sacred spaces.

The exhibit’s curator, Jacquiline Creswell, expressed that she was personally wounded by negative reactions, particularly from those who identify as Christians.

“The amount of personal abuse (exhibit leader Alex Vellis) and I have received on social media, from people who are ‘Christian’… that has been hurtful.”

She shared.

Creswell emphasized

“In no way did we want to desecrate the building. I don’t think asking God a question is anything other than a beautiful reflection, and even a form of prayer.”

The exhibit drew national attention following criticism from public figures such as Vice President J.D. Vance and Elon Musk, who called it disrespectful to Christian heritage.

Faithful Christians were troubled by what they perceived as a disregard for the sanctity of the cathedral, a long-revered house of worship.

Creswell addressed the importance of dialogue, noting that even controversial installations can foster meaningful conversations about faith and culture.

She recounted similar experiences from her previous role at Salisbury Cathedral, recalling:

“I was told that I was turning the place into a theme park.”

She later found that many skeptics came to appreciate the artwork after open discussion.

This episode serves as a reminder to defend Christian heritage with grace while upholding the sacred significance entrusted to historic churches.

Ryan Gosling Explores Sacrifice and Hope in a Faith-Inspired Sci-Fi Blockbuster

Faith Facts

  • Ryan Gosling produced family-friendly sci-fi to enjoy with his wife Eva Mendes and daughters.
  • Film highlights sacrifice mirroring John 15:13, fostering courage over fear.
  • Rejects dystopian gloom, celebrates God-given human ingenuity and cooperation.

Ryan Gosling stars as Ryland Grace in Project Hail Mary, a film he produced for his family’s enjoyment amid scarce wholesome entertainment.

“[My wife] Eva and I look for films that we can go to with our whole family, and we find it hard to find.”

The story follows Grace, a science teacher awakening on a spaceship to save Earth from a solar threat, bonding with alien Rocky in sacrificial friendship.

This reflects greater love in John 15:13:

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

“There’s something thematically that you want to show your kids,”

Gosling said, praising its shift from panic to problem-solving.

Gosling connects Grace’s terror and resilience to fatherhood, urging curiosity over anxiety in uncertain times.

“The future is not to be feared. It’s something to figure out.”

Believers Welcome New Restrictions on Online Dangers as Biblical Values Rise in the UK

Faith Facts

  • Closes loopholes banning adults pretending to be children in pornographic material.
  • Requires platforms to verify age and consent, granting depicted women right to withdraw consent anytime.
  • Prohibits incest, step-incest content and ‘nudification’ apps to protect vulnerable.

Christian think tank CARE hails House of Lords votes imposing safeguards on online pornography, long unchecked unlike BBFC-regulated terrestrial content.

These reforms uphold Biblical standards by banning exploitative material that humiliates women and depicts illegal acts.

Caroline Ansell, CARE’s director of advocacy and policy, said

“It marks an important moment in the fight to bring basic standards, safeguards and accountability to an online porn industry that has operated in the shadows for too long.”

“We warmly welcome the amendments passed, each of them will better protect women, children, and anyone at risk of harm,” she said.

The government’s Online Safety Act advances family protections against youth porn access, while vigilance remains for free speech.
