The UN International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief brings renewed attention to the seven Eritrean pastors held captive for their faith. Faith-based organizations are urging their release, highlighting Eritrea’s restrictive policies against Christians.
Eritrea, often termed the ‘North Korea of Africa,’ demands all denominations outside the three government-approved churches operate underground, subjecting believers to severe risks. The suffering of these detained pastors reflects the price of standing firm in Christ in a hostile regime.
“Not one has been charged or brought before a court. They have had no legal representation, and their families have not been permitted to visit them. Their plight epitomises the suffering of thousands of prisoners of conscience currently held without charge or trial in Eritrea.”
Families and local communities may also distance themselves from persecuted believers, compounding their suffering but also strengthening the resolve of Christians to trust in God. During a recent peaceful protest, people of faith united in prayer and advocacy outside the Eritrean Embassy, standing up for religious freedom and dignity.
“Anything done by any churches or its members seen as a threat to the absolute control currently in place will be subjected to punishment.”
