Gallup reports a dramatic 17-point drop in the number of Americans considering religion important over the past decade, even as the nation remains more religious than countries like the United Kingdom and Germany.
Researchers found that while the percentage of Americans with Christian affiliation is now much like those in European nations with Protestant histories, religion still shapes everyday American life more distinctly.
“Declining religion is not about adults making a decision to leave religion. It’s not about the deeply considered rational choices of people who’ve decided to leave the Church. The vast majority of declining religiosity in America is happening to 13-year-olds, 14-year-olds [and] 16-year-olds. It’s happening to minors while they are at home,” said researcher Lyman Stone.
Stone also emphasized the importance of strong religious households and faith-based education for passing on Christian values.
