  • Just 49% of American adults now say religion is important in their daily lives, down from 66% in 2015.
  • Despite this decrease, Americans remain more devout than many other economically similar nations.
  • The greatest drop in religious importance is most pronounced among younger teens and during the secondary school years.

America’s foundation in faith continues, yet new research shows fewer adults place a high value on religion each day. Gallup reports a dramatic 17-point drop in the number of Americans considering religion important over the past decade, even as the nation remains more religious than countries like the United Kingdom and Germany.

Researchers found that while the percentage of Americans with Christian affiliation is now much like those in European nations with Protestant histories, religion still shapes everyday American life more distinctly.

“Declining religion is not about adults making a decision to leave religion. It’s not about the deeply considered rational choices of people who’ve decided to leave the Church. The vast majority of declining religiosity in America is happening to 13-year-olds, 14-year-olds [and] 16-year-olds. It’s happening to minors while they are at home,” said researcher Lyman Stone.

Stone also emphasized the importance of strong religious households and faith-based education for passing on Christian values.

As believers, strengthening family traditions, supporting faith-driven education, and fostering a culture of life and truth rooted in God’s Word remain crucial for America’s future. Stand firm and pray for the next generation’s spiritual revival and a restoration of faith in our homes and communities.
