  • Christian leaders reaffirm life as a sacred gift and advocate for palliative care instead of assisted death.
  • The new law awaits regulation by the Executive Branch before implementation.

Uruguay’s recent vote to legalize euthanasia by parliamentary decision has prompted deep reflection on the sanctity of life and the role of faith in public policy. While the law aims to provide a painless death for adults with terminal conditions, it has drawn strong opposition from Christian and conservative voices.

“The Evangelical Alliance has a clear and firm message about euthanasia — we say, categorically, no to euthanasia. No to accelerating the process of death.”

Faith leaders emphasize that caring for the suffering through compassionate palliative care upholds dignity and respects life’s intrinsic value. The Catholic Church and Evangelical communities have voiced their stance, urging society to embrace life and accompany those who suffer until natural death.

Bishop Martín Pérez Scremini of Florida stated, “We say a firm no to euthanasia — causing the death of a sick person is ethically unacceptable.”

Now more than ever, Christians are called to defend the vulnerable, promote a culture of life, and support policies grounded in Biblical principles.
