As believers, we frequently declare our longing for God’s will to be done in our lives. We pray, we sing, and we teach about surrender, but do we genuinely mean it? Too often, we seek God’s will only as long as it matches our own ambitions, plans, and desires.

When obedience to the Lord calls us outside our comfort zone, many hesitate or even resist. True discipleship means yielding even our most cherished goals and relationships, echoing the scriptural charge: “If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” (Luke 9:23)

Modern culture—even within the church—frequently sidesteps this challenge. Many congregations swell in size by presenting a comfortable, sanitized version of God’s love. This version avoids the hard edges of the Gospel: self-denial, repentance, and dying to self-interest.

Pastors and Christian leaders, in their love for their flock, must not shy away from conveying God’s full truth. As one Christian leader put it, “Jesus didn’t say, ‘Follow Me and I’ll grant all your dreams.’ He issued a call to take up our cross.”

God’s will is not always easy. It may require that we lay down an idol or forgive someone who has hurt us deeply. We may fear that surrender means a loss of identity, comfort, or even security. But Scripture assures us again and again—His plans are good, even when His answers feel like silence or surrender feels like loss. In fact, the delays or denials from God are often His loving protection, saving us from pitfalls we cannot see.

“Thank God for unanswered prayers,” a wise Christian once remarked, reminding us that the things we desperately crave may sometimes lead us astray or away from the Lord’s best for us.

The life of faith is not about lobbying for our personal preferences, but trusting in the loving sovereignty of our Creator. We are called to open our hands, release control, and find peace in following where He leads—even if the path is narrow, unpopular, or paved with hardship. “If we’re praying with clenched fists, trying to get God to conform to our desires, then we’re not praying—we’re lobbying!”

The transformation of our hearts is not instantaneous. True surrender is a daily process supported by prayer, Scripture, and the wise counsel of the Christian community. It is shaped by repentance, humility, and a willingness to exchange momentary happiness for eternal reward.

Let us reject the temptation of easy, self-serving faith. Instead, let us embrace the refining fire of God’s will, knowing that His ways—though sometimes mysterious and difficult—are always good and always rooted in love.

The real tragedy is not in relinquishing our own plans, but in missing the abundant life God has prepared for us by clinging stubbornly to our own will. Let us pray for courage to trust, obey, and delight in God’s purpose for our lives.
