Cities are at the heart of God’s redemptive mission, shaped by the gospel’s power to renew lives and communities. Christian leaders at the World Evangelical Alliance General Assembly called believers to serve cities faithfully, guided by Christ’s example.

Dr. Chris Elisara reminded attendees that God’s love for people is evident in His care for cities and neighborhoods.

“God loves cities — always has and always will.”

The Bible’s story—from the Garden of Eden to the New Jerusalem—centers on places where people flourish under God’s guidance. Elisara called on Christians to respond to urban challenges with compassion modeled after Christ.

“Do we weep over our cities — the places meant for flourishing that have fallen into decay? Jesus did, and through the cross He brought heaven on earth to transform the city.”

Dr. Darrell Bock highlighted that culture changes as hearts do, not merely by laws or politics. He urged the Church to embrace its gospel calling with persuasion, love, and truth.

“You transform cities with people who reconnect to the living God from whom they’ve been separated.”

He emphasized that Christians should engage the public square respectfully and relationally, focusing on service rather than dominance.

“We are in a ministry of persuasion, not a ministry of privilege.”

Bock called for a gospel witness marked by gentleness, respect, and Christlike love.

“We challenge because we love. The gospel holds both challenge and invitation.”

Both speakers affirmed that mission to cities aligns with God’s purposes, as believers work for the good of their communities and witness to God’s renewing grace.

Let us pray for our cities and seek opportunities to share Christ’s hope and serve others with genuine faith.
