Study Reveals Hidden Risks of Abortion Pill
In a world where the sanctity of life is often overshadowed by modern conveniences, a recent study by the Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC) sheds light on the alarming realities of the abortion pill, mifepristone. This study, which is the largest-known review of its kind in the United States, reveals that one in ten women experience a “serious adverse event” after taking this pill. This figure starkly contrasts with the “less than 0.5%” adverse event rate reported in clinical trials by the drug’s manufacturer, Danco Laboratories.
The EPPC’s findings are a clarion call for truth and transparency. Their analysis, based on real-world data from 865,727 mifepristone abortions between 2017 and 2023, shows a serious adverse event rate of 10.93%. This is at least 22 times higher than the misleading summary figure on the drug label. As the EPPC rightly points out, “Simply stated, mifepristone, as used in real-world conditions, is not ‘safe and effective.'”
This revelation comes at a critical time when many states are implementing pro-life laws following the Supreme Court’s historic decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in June 2022. Yet, despite these efforts to protect life, the use of telehealth services to bypass abortion bans has surged, with telehealth accounting for 19% of abortions in the U.S. healthcare system as of December 2023.
The increase in abortion rates, fueled by the widespread availability of the abortion pill, is a sobering reminder of the need to uphold the values of life and family. In 2023 alone, the abortion pill accounted for 63% of all abortions, a statistic that should prompt us to reflect on the moral and ethical implications of such practices.
Despite these concerning findings, FDA Commissioner Marty Makary has stated that he has “no plans to take action” to limit the availability of mifepristone. This inaction underscores the importance of advocating for policies that prioritize the health and well-being of women and the unborn.
The EPPC’s study, authored by President Ryan T. Anderson and Director of Data Analysis Jamie Bryan Hall, is a testament to the power of truth in shaping public discourse. It challenges us to question the narratives that downplay the risks associated with abortion and to champion a culture that values life at every stage.
