Cuthberga and her sister Cwenburga joined Barking Abbey, gaining knowledge under the guidance of St Hildelitha. They later returned to Wessex and, with their brother King Ine’s support, founded Wimborne Abbey — a dual monastery for men and women devoted to prayer and learning.
Abbesses such as Cuthberga were influential, leading religious communities and serving as spiritual and administrative heads. Their participation in councils underscored the dignity and influence Christian women wielded during the Anglo-Saxon era.
