Cuthberga and her sister Cwenburga joined Barking Abbey, gaining knowledge under the guidance of St Hildelitha. They later returned to Wessex and, with their brother King Ine’s support, founded Wimborne Abbey — a dual monastery for men and women devoted to prayer and learning.
Abbesses such as Cuthberga were influential, leading religious communities and serving as spiritual and administrative heads. Their participation in councils underscored the dignity and influence Christian women wielded during the Anglo-Saxon era.

St Cuthberga passed away in AD 725, remembered for her self-discipline and commitment to spiritual growth. After her passing, Wimborne continued as a stronghold for missionary activity, sending figures like St Lioba and St Walburga to evangelize in Europe.
