Scottish Christians Oppose Abortion Up to Birth Plan

Christian voices across Scotland have strongly opposed new abortion recommendations, voicing grave concerns about the sanctity of life. The plans would remove protective measures and potentially allow abortion for any reason up until birth.
The proposed legislation would eliminate the requirement for two doctors’ sign-off and introduce abortion on request up to 24 weeks. For the first time, it would also allow abortion up to birth if two healthcare professionals agree it is ‘appropriate’.
Christian and pro-life leaders say these proposals show little respect for unborn children and undermine core Biblical values of protecting life at all stages.
Other recommendations include enshrining a legal ‘right to abortion,’ removing the offence of concealing disposal of babies aborted at home, and requiring objecting health professionals to refer patients elsewhere.
“If enacted, we believe they would have heart-breaking consequences for women and babies, including exposing more women to the dangers and harms of late-term abortions.”
Right to Life UK and the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children warn the proposals disregard public opinion and would take Scotland far beyond international norms on abortion limits.
There are also concerns about the composition of the advisory group, with close connections to abortion providers and a lack of diverse perspectives, raising worries about conflicts of interest.
Many Christian advocates urge Scottish lawmakers to pursue legislation that upholds Biblical principles, cherishes both mother and child, and affirms the dignity of every human life.
“What is being suggested is an extreme and inhumane change to the law, which polling shows is widely opposed by women.”
