Scotland Warned Against Abortion Extremism
Faith Facts
- Scotland’s government is being urged to reconsider radical abortion proposals following an expert group report.
- The group recommended abortion be permitted up to birth and removed key medical safeguards.
- Christian leaders and pro-life advocates warn these changes threaten the sanctity of life and Christian moral values.
Miriam Cates has sounded the alarm about growing abortion extremism in Scotland. She highlighted in her commentary that the government’s Abortion Law Reform Expert Group lacked any pro-life members and featured leaders from the nation’s largest abortion provider.
“There is a clear conflict of interest here. Abortion providers, who stand to benefit from many of the proposals the report suggests, including largely removing them from criminal liability, diluting reporting requirements and scrutiny … were given free rein to lobby for a law to suit their purposes,” she said.
The Scottish government faces criticism for going further than Westminster on issues like assisted suicide and abortion. Cates warns that allowing abortion up to birth, including by medical professionals at full term, endangers women and unborn children.
BPAS has expressed support for expanding these policies into England and Wales. Cates appeals to lawmakers across the United Kingdom to reject such radical changes that disregard the value of life created in God’s image.
