Ryder, raised as a Wesleyan Methodist, helped grow and support his local church while also shaping the spiritual education of dozens of teachers in St Albans.
His sense of responsibility toward those in need led him into civic leadership, including becoming the city’s mayor in 1905 and providing for community projects out of his own resources.
