The White House Religious Liberty Commission held its final hearing at the Museum of the Bible, addressing concerns about pressure on faith in public life. Chaired by Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, the commission examined how the phrase “separation of church and state” is being used in modern debates.
Witnesses testified that the phrase has been weaponized to suppress religious rights and promote secular relativism. Law professor Helen Alvaré said government overreach often stems from a misunderstanding of Jefferson’s intent, which was never meant to exile faith from the public square.
Commissioner Robert Barron noted that the worship of self has become a principal enemy of liberty. Author Eric Metaxas warned that when Christian faith is weakened in culture, liberty for all citizens begins to erode.
The commission also highlighted legal battles faced by religious groups such as the Sisters of Life, who have been targeted by state laws for their pro-life ministry. Supporters are urging the President to extend the commission’s charter so it can continue monitoring threats to religious liberty.
