  • Washington state agreed not to force Catholic priests to report confessions.
  • A court injunction now protects the Catholic Sacrament of Confession from government intrusion.
  • Clergy remain mandatory reporters outside the confessional.

Washington’s decision marks a significant victory for the protection of religious freedom. The agreement ensures that the sacred bond of confession remains safe from government mandates.

“This is a victory for religious freedom and for common sense. Priests should never be forced to make the impossible choice of betraying their sacred vows or going to jail.”

Senate Bill 5375, recently enacted, included clergy among mandatory reporters of child abuse or neglect.

The law was challenged by Roman Catholic leaders and faith-based advocates as an attack on the Church’s sacred responsibilities and Christian liberty.

Archbishop Paul Etienne reaffirmed a Christian commitment to protect children and to uphold healing for victims, while standing firm on the biblical principle of confession.

As believers, we must continue to defend faith, family, and freedom, ensuring that government respects God-given rights and the mission of the Church.
