  • Recent anti-Christian violence is linked to political efforts to impose stricter conversion laws and incitement by radical leaders in Maharashtra.

In early July, a Christian pastor in Maharashtra, India, endured violence after Hindu nationalist extremists invaded his church during communion, claiming he was serving ‘blood.’

Despite clarifying the beverage was grape juice, the mob attacked him, demanded official documents, seized the elements, and filmed the incident to share broadly.

Later, videos and posts falsely accused the pastor of coercing women with wine and promising incentives for religious conversion.

Local believers reject these allegations as part of an organized effort to discredit Christians and restrict religious freedom within the state.

“Hindu extremists distort and fabricate claims to fit their agenda and incite fear and hostility against Christians.”

Pressure from the state government and extremist groups seeks to push anti-conversion laws, increasing scrutiny and persecution of believers in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra, among several states with such pressures, faces calls for stricter anti-conversion measures, which are often misused against minorities.

An extremist politician recently offered financial rewards for violence against Christians, escalating hostility and encouraging attacks.

India ranks as one of the most dangerous places for Christians, according to a global persecution report, with radical groups openly targeting believers.

“Several Hindutva political leaders are known to be spreading hate speech and accusing the Christian community of coercive conversion.”

Standing firm in faith and advocating for justice remains crucial as Christians in India experience increasing threats to religious liberty and safety.

Let us pray for our brothers and sisters facing hostility, and encourage our communities to stand strong for truth and freedom.
