Over 600 Catholic Missionaries Martyred Worldwide
Faith Facts
- Since 1990, 626 Catholic missionaries and pastoral workers have lost their lives worldwide.
- Africa and the Americas are the regions with the highest number of these tragic deaths.
- Violence against Catholic clergy and pastoral workers has shown signs of decline in recent years.
The recent Vatican report shines a light on the courageous witness of Catholic missionaries, many of whom have faced grave dangers while serving others in Christ’s name. Their sacrifices remind us of the vital call to defend faith and serve those in need, even at great personal risk.
Last year saw 17 missionaries killed—including priests, seminarians, religious sisters, catechists, and lay workers—in countries plagued by violence and instability. Their unwavering service echoes Biblical teachings of laying down one’s life for others and standing firm in the cause of righteousness.
“These are often witnesses and missionaries who voluntarily offered their lives to Christ until the very end.”
The faithful example of these individuals stands as a testament to the enduring strength of Christian values. Let us keep their memories alive by praying for persecuted Christians and committing ourselves anew to uphold faith and freedom.
