The state of Odisha has refused to release Rabindra Kumar Pal, also known as Dara Singh, from his life sentence for the brutal 1999 murders of Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two young sons.

The attack took place in the village of Manoharpur, where Staines and his boys were burned alive while sleeping in their vehicle.

Authorities determined that the crime was driven by religious hatred and that the killer showed no remorse warranting mercy.

“The crime committed was heinous in nature and the convict has not shown any remorse,” the state government stated in its decision.

Christian leaders have long called for justice in the case, noting that the murders targeted men of faith who were serving the poor.

The ruling affirms that religious violence will not be excused or minimized in India’s eastern state.
