  • The Bible Society’s Patmos Typology Report studies how culture, faith, and economics shape engagement with Scripture in 85 nations.
  • Globally, a majority believe in God, and interest in the Bible endures even among non-Christians.
  • The report details seven distinct clusters affecting how people access, trust, and embrace the Bible, offering guidance for churches and believers worldwide.

The Patmos Typology Report, created with the United Bible Societies and Gallup, provides a strategic overview of how various global environments influence engagement with God’s Word.

Extending data from the expansive World Bible Attitudes Survey, this analysis identifies both unique opportunities and significant obstacles for advancing Scripture-based ministry on every continent.

Cluster 1 features countries where Christians are a steadfast minority amid predominantly Muslim societies, often facing economic difficulties and low Bible literacy.

Although 94% there say faith is vital, only 3% own a Bible, but many are searching for life’s purpose.

In Cluster 2—covering much of Central and Eastern Europe—Christianity is the majority, but trust and participation are waning, especially in younger generations.

Weekly Bible use is just 9%, and only 59% say faith is meaningful in daily life, yet over half express some ongoing interest in Scripture.

Cluster 3 examines majority-Muslim, economically advanced areas in the Middle East and North Africa, where Christian minorities persevere despite pressure and restrictions on outreach.

Less than 2% there own a Bible, though faith remains important to 85%, and local churches display notable resilience.

South and Central America, plus the Philippines, are grouped as Cluster 4, where Christian faith powerfully shapes society even as secularism rises.

Bible ownership is high (74%), with vibrant weekly participation, reflecting continuing enthusiasm for God’s Word amid modern challenges.

Cluster 5 highlights highly developed, Western nations—such as the US, UK, and Australia—where many claim no religion, and regular Scripture engagement lags despite wide Bible access.

Creative outreach and relational approaches are urged to inspire a return to the roots of faith and truth, especially among spiritually curious young adults.

Cluster 6 comprises diverse Asian cultures with low Bible awareness; only 7% own a Bible, and most have never heard of it.

Patience and innovation in education and storytelling, rooted in steadfast witness, are pivotal for reaching hearts in these fields.

Sub-Saharan Africa represents Cluster 7, where Christianity thrives and is woven into daily and communal life, setting an example of vibrant biblical faith for the world.

This groundbreaking report encourages the faithful to renew their commitment to spreading God’s Word and living out biblical values in every land.

May churches and believers seize these insights to advance Christian truth with courage rooted in Christ’s love.
