Lord Alton Condemns Abortion Law Proposal

Lord Alton released his planned speech after being unable to attend the Lords debate on a bill amendment that removes criminal penalties for abortion, effectively allowing abortion until birth.
He argued the measure was “deeply shocking,” especially as it passed quickly in the House of Commons.
Lord Alton highlighted that the original bill was supposed to address crime and anti-social behavior, yet had been appropriated for pushing radical abortion changes.
“Hijacking an unrelated Bill to try to force through what would be the biggest change to abortion law in this country since the Abortion Act in 1967 is no way to make law,” he said.
He pointed out that British law already allows abortion up to 24 weeks—double the European Union average of 12 weeks.
The proposed bill could result in more women being exposed to dangers, particularly through late-term at-home abortions.
“Imagine the distress, practicalities, and dehumanisation of these self-administered procedures,” he said.
Lord Alton opposed the “pills by post” scheme and called for a return to in-person medical consultations before abortions, emphasizing the need to protect both mother and child.
In closing, he declared, “If we fail to raise our voices now and fail to rouse the conscience of the nation, both women and unborn babies will be the victims. Both lives matter and we should unhesitatingly say so. We are a civilised country – not a barbaric one. Introducing abortion up to birth should have no place in a civilised society. It is abhorrent.”
