Justice Alito Praises Dobbs Ruling While Affirming Same-Sex Marriage Precedent
Faith Facts
- Justice Alito called the 2022 Dobbs decision “the leading example” of courage on the Court.
- The ruling returned abortion policy to the states, upholding the constitutional principle that unborn life deserves protection.
- Alito indicated the 2015 Obergefell decision on same-sex marriage will remain settled law.
Justice Samuel Alito recently offered rare public insight into the Supreme Court’s most consequential decisions of the last decade.
Speaking at an event, the justice described the 2022 Dobbs ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade as a defining moment that required courage from the bench.
Alito noted that returning the question of abortion to the democratic process respected the constitutional order and the moral convictions of millions of Americans who believe life begins at conception.
“It’s the leading example of a case that required courage from the justices,” Alito stated.
The justice also addressed ongoing speculation about whether the Court might revisit the 2015 Obergefell decision that imposed same-sex marriage nationwide.
Alito made clear he does not expect that precedent to be overturned, signaling that the Court’s current composition is unlikely to take up the issue again.
“I don’t think that’s going to happen,” Alito said regarding the possibility of revisiting same-sex marriage.
His comments come as the nation continues to wrestle with the cultural and legal fallout from both rulings.
Many Christians see the Dobbs decision as a long-awaited correction that protects the unborn while leaving room for states to reflect their citizens’ values.
The affirmation that Obergefell will stand suggests the Court is drawing a line between correcting past errors and reopening settled cultural questions.

Episcopal Bishop Who Confronted Trump From Pulpit to Step Down in 2028
Faith Facts
- The Episcopal Church remains one of America’s historic Protestant denominations with deep roots in the founding era.
- Presidents from both parties have traditionally attended the Washington National Cathedral prayer service on Inauguration Day.
- Christian leaders are called to shepherd their flocks with truth and grace rather than political confrontation.
An Episcopal bishop who gained national attention for publicly rebuking President Donald Trump during the 2025 inaugural prayer service has announced her intention to retire.
The Rt. Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, who leads the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, stated that she will conclude her tenure at the end of 2028 after nearly two decades of service.
During the January 2025 prayer service at Washington National Cathedral, Bishop Budde used her sermon to directly address the newly inaugurated president, urging him to show mercy toward certain groups.
“I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now,” she said during the nationally televised service.
The remarks drew immediate praise from some quarters and sharp criticism from others who viewed the pulpit as an inappropriate venue for political confrontation.
Under traditional Christian teaching, clergy are entrusted with proclaiming the full counsel of God rather than advancing partisan agendas from the altar.
“In January of 2028, I will have served 18 years as your bishop,” Budde wrote in a letter to her diocese.
Her successor will be chosen through the Episcopal Church’s established discernment process, which involves clergy, lay leaders, and the broader diocese.

The pastor’s remarks come as the political landscape continues to shift, with many traditional Christians feeling increasingly at odds with Democratic policies on issues ranging from abortion to gender ideology.
“James Talarico is not a Christian,”
