Jesus Painting Restored: Faith Triumphs at USMMA
Faith Facts
- “Christ on the Water,” a painting depicting Christ rescuing sailors, has been brought up from the basement at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy after being removed in 2023.
- The return of the painting follows public outcry, bold leadership from Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, and strong support from midshipmen and faith advocates.
- Amid opposition, the painting continues to stand as a symbol of God’s guiding presence, reminding midshipmen—and America—of faith’s vital place in our heritage.
After months out of view, the revered ‘Christ on the Water’ painting has been returned to a visible place at USMMA, thanks to steadfast Christian voices championing religious freedom. The painting, treasured for nearly eight decades, once again reminds the Academy’s midshipmen of God’s protection and hope amid life’s storms.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy celebrated the restoration and called for ongoing efforts to ensure faith remains respected in public life.
“All glory to God! “Christ on the Water” is out of the basement. Work will continue to get it fully restored and back into a place of prominence. To our amazing men and women at USMMA — religious expression is something we celebrate, not condemn.”

The painting’s presence, once challenged for supposedly violating the separation of church and state, now affirms the vital space for faith in our institutions. Midshipmen have credited the artwork for providing comfort and encouragement during challenging times, affirming its role as a beacon of hope and faith on campus.
Stand firm on Biblical principles, support religious liberty, and pray for courage for all who champion faith in America’s public square.
