The painting, treasured for nearly eight decades, once again reminds the Academy’s midshipmen of God’s protection and hope amid life’s storms.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy celebrated the restoration and called for ongoing efforts to ensure faith remains respected in public life.

“All glory to God! “Christ on the Water” is out of the basement. Work will continue to get it fully restored and back into a place of prominence. To our amazing men and women at USMMA — religious expression is something we celebrate, not condemn.”

The painting’s presence, once challenged for supposedly violating the separation of church and state, now affirms the vital space for faith in our institutions.
