  • Italian church leaders signed a national “Covenant Between Christian Churches” in Bari on Jan. 23, uniting Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, and some Evangelical and Pentecostal groups.
  • The Italian Evangelical Alliance expressed concerns about the covenant’s approach to Christian unity, evangelism, and doctrinal distinctives.
  • The participation of a Pentecostal church in this ecumenical agreement marks a significant shift within the Italian Pentecostal community.

The recent ecumenical covenant in Italy seeks to foster cooperation and mutual recognition among diverse Christian traditions. This initiative highlights ongoing changes in relationships between denominations, yet raises significant questions about core doctrinal beliefs.

The Italian Evangelical Alliance issued a caution, emphasizing the importance of protecting biblical truth and the essential mission to share the gospel freely. They warned that efforts to diminish doctrinal clarity in favor of broad unity could compromise scriptural convictions.

“This covenant risks treating unity as an absolute value without sufficient attention to doctrinal differences that are essential to the biblical gospel.”

The alliance also questioned whether welcoming all churches as equal could disregard the lasting distinctions rooted in the Reformation. They called for vigilance so that the clear message of salvation through faith in Christ alone is never lost.
