  • An interfaith group filed a lawsuit contesting the Religious Liberty Commission’s focus on Christianity.
  • The lawsuit alleges lack of transparency and a narrow religious perspective in the Commission’s activities.
  • The Department of Justice asserts the Commission serves to advance religious freedom for all Americans.

The newly formed Religious Liberty Commission within the U.S. Department of Justice is facing a lawsuit filed by several interfaith organizations. The plaintiffs claim that the Commission upholds a primarily Judeo-Christian viewpoint and neglects broader religious diversity.

According to the complaint, “While this body is ostensibly designed to defend ‘religious liberty for all Americans’ and celebrate ‘religious pluralism’ it actually represents only a single ‘Judeo-Christian’ viewpoint.”

The suit also criticizes the Commission for limited disclosure of its work and alleged favoritism, raising concerns under federal guidelines.

One DOJ spokesperson responded by emphasizing the Commission’s mission to provide a platform for Americans from all backgrounds to discuss religious liberty and civil rights.

Members of the Commission include a majority of Christians who, as outlined in the lawsuit, believe America was founded under Biblically inspired principles. The leadership asserts the Commission is charged with promoting religious liberty through legal and policy recommendations.

During a recent hearing, Professor Mark Rienzi remarked, “These days, frankly, I don’t think it so much comes from religious people trying to use government to stamp out people with unpopular views.”

The Commission, which continues to hold public meetings, recently addressed issues such as antisemitism and religious liberty in private enterprise.

America’s founding principles protect faith and freedom for all. As Christians, we are called to champion these rights, ensuring every individual is free to live out their faith in the public square. Stay informed and pray for wise leadership that honors God’s design for liberty.
