India’s place on the World Watch List shifted, but Christian leaders warn that real persecution is growing more severe beneath the surface. They emphasize that downward movement in global rankings does not reflect true conditions, as violence and oppressive laws have reached new heights.
“India’s marginal drop in the World Watch List ranking must not be construed as an improvement in the condition of Christians, which in fact has sharply aggravated,” said Dr. John Dayal, a prominent advocate for religious freedom.
Pastors and advocates are sounding the alarm as detentions and incidents of harassment surge; the violence score hit its highest level since records began in 1993.
Reports from faith-based organizations reveal that attacks on Christians, including wrongful accusations under anti-conversion laws, are being used to silence and intimidate believers in their daily walk.
Echoing this concern, Rev. Vijayesh Lal observed
“Persecution today often operates below the threshold of mass violence. But it is persistent, localized and deeply corrosive to religious freedom.”

With several Indian states adopting even stricter anti-conversion statutes, Christians face increasing legal hurdles simply for practicing and sharing their faith.
