  • David Skinner, 80, had his conviction overturned by a High Court judge.
  • Justice Saini said the ruling protected Skinner's freedom of religion and expression.
  • The case involved graphic abortion images sent to public officials in protest.

A High Court judge has overturned the conviction of David Skinner, an 80-year-old Christian who was penalized for sharing the harsh reality of abortion with public officials.

Justice Saini ruled that upholding the conviction would disproportionately interfere with Skinner's fundamental rights to freedom of religion and expression.

“This is a case about freedom of expression and freedom of religion,”

The judge noted that while the images might be confronting, the criminal law cannot be used as a shortcut to silence lawful expression on matters of public interest.

This decision reasserts the vital principle that in a free society, we must protect the right to speak on matters of conscience and the sanctity of life.

“I hope this ruling will protect others who wish to speak out peacefully on matters of conscience without fear of being criminalised,”

Skinner expressed deep gratitude for the ruling, noting that his intention was never to cause distress but to highlight profound moral issues.

The Christian Legal Centre, which backed the case, stated that the judgment serves as a warning against the misuse of laws to chill religious and political speech.

We must continue to pray for the protection of those who stand for the unborn and for the preservation of our God-given right to speak the truth in the public square.
