God’s Truth Shines Through as a Troubling Christian Praise Sparks Widespread Concern and Faithful Reflection
Faith Facts
- New York Times columnist David French praised Democrat James Talarico as a true Christian despite his unbiblical stances on abortion, transgenderism, and race.
- Leaders like Al Mohler, Erick Erickson, and Colin Smothers condemned French for calling evil good and twisting Scripture.
- French replied to a satirical account parodying C.S. Lewis’s demonic N.I.C.E. before deleting his comment.
Democratic Texas Rep. James Talarico, a Presbyterian seminarian, promotes liberal views on Scripture, abortion, gender, and sexuality that faithful Christians reject as contrary to God’s Word.
David French’s op-ed lauded Talarico’s supposed decency amid political division, positioning him against MAGA Christians after French’s 2024 endorsement of Kamala Harris.
“Yet if the primary American divide is between decent and indecent, then the equation changes. Talarico shines,” French wrote.
Erick Erickson warned that Talarico’s positions, like using Christ’s conception to justify abortion and calling whiteness a virus, lead souls to hell.
“It is not decent to twist Scripture to lead others to hell. It is not decent to claim whiteness itself is like a virus,” Erickson said.
Colin J. Smothers declared French’s praise shows he now sees good as evil and evil as good.
Pastor Mark Brown labeled French a Pharisee who burdens sinners while ignoring true repentance.
“So now you know exactly what David French is — he is a Pharisee,” Brown stated.
Al Mohler critiqued Talarico’s PCUSA theology, including abortion rights and LGBTQ affirmation, as a threat to the evangelical soul.
Republican Rep. Brent Money called Talarico’s advocacy demonic, regardless of his charm.
