Alabama Governor Kay Ivey recently signed the Alabama Released Time Credit Act, a landmark piece of legislation that empowers parents to prioritize their children’s spiritual growth.
This law requires public schools to allow students to attend off-campus religious instruction during school hours.
By facilitating these releases, Alabama recognizes that the moral development of the next generation is a responsibility shared by families and their communities.
This decision aligns with long-standing American traditions of religious freedom and parental rights over state-controlled curriculum.
“Parents have the right and responsibility to guide the upbringing and education of their children,” stated ADF Senior Counsel Greg Chafuen.
“When the state encourages religious instruction… it follows the best of our traditions,” the 1952 Supreme Court opinion famously declared.
Despite secular opposition claiming these programs are a distraction, this law stands as a victory for those who believe education should involve more than just secular academics.
We must continue to pray for our leaders to protect the sacred right of parents to train their children in the way they should go.
