God’s Prayer-Delivered Victory Shines in Battle’s Fierce Gloom
From the founding of our republic to the battlefields of Europe, faith remains the bedrock of the American experiment.
During the darkest hours of World War II, General George Patton showed that victory requires more than military might alone.
It also calls for humble submission to the Almighty.
Faith Facts
- General Patton commissioned a special prayer distributed to 250,000 soldiers asking God to restrain the immoderate rains and grant fair weather for battle.
- Following the distribution of these prayer cards, the weather cleared on December 23, allowing Allied air support to resupply the besieged troops.
- Today, only about 45,000 of the original 16.4 million Americans who served in World War II remain alive to share these testimonies of divine providence.
“Almighty and merciful Father, we humbly beseech Thee, of Thy great goodness, to restrain these immoderate rains with which we have had to contend. Grant us fair weather for battle. Graciously hearken to us as soldiers who call upon Thee that, armed with Thy power, we may advance from victory to victory, crush the oppression and wickedness of our enemies, and establish Thy justice among men and nations. Amen.”
The victory at Bastogne reminds us that our freedoms were secured through both physical sacrifice and spiritual dependency.
We are called to honor the Greatest Generation by carrying forward their legacy of courageous faith and unyielding patriotism.
As we reflect on these historic moments of divine intervention, let us commit to supporting our veterans and praying boldly for our nation’s future.
We must never forget that the same God who answered the cries of soldiers in Belgium remains our hope and shield today.
