Florida County Backs Ten Commandments Display

The Collier County Board of County Commissioners approved a recommendation to include the Ten Commandments within historical document exhibits on county property. The measure passed 4-1 after considerable public debate reflecting both support and opposition from the community.
Commissioner Chris Hall, who championed the recommendation, drew inspiration from conversations with local leaders and emphasized the need to return to principles that shaped America. He expressed gratitude for the approval, expressing surprise at the resistance faced.
Local officials, along with the county attorney, will determine the details for integrating the Ten Commandments into the display. The exhibit will feature several foundational documents to reflect the roots of American governance.
Opposition came from some area residents and progressive advocates who questioned the appropriateness of religious texts within government spaces. Rev. Sharon Harris-Euing, president of the Interfaith Alliance of Southwest Florida, voiced concerns, stating:
“Everything about it seems inappropriate and contrary to the principles of a free society where religion and government are separate.”
Commissioner Burt L. Saunders, the sole dissenting vote, cited apprehensions about divisiveness and the separation of church and state, referencing a letter from a concerned resident.
Hall refuted separation concerns, saying:
“The mere mention of the word of God or prayer or Christianity or anything does not mean that we are putting religion on to people. It has nothing to do with that.”
He further stressed that including the Ten Commandments alongside other historical documents honors the nation’s roots and does not impose religion.
