Faith Facts

  • About half of Protestant pastors say the economy is negatively impacting their congregations, down from 66% last year.
  • 37% of churches saw an increase in giving, 39% maintained the same levels, and 20% reported a decrease.
  • Economic views among pastors are influenced by both local conditions and broader national trends.

The economic pressures facing American churches have eased somewhat compared to last year, but challenges remain. Many Christian communities are adapting prayerfully and seeking God’s providence as they support their ministries.

Scott McConnell of Lifeway Research noted that despite improved perceptions, economic uncertainty is still impacting churches more negatively than positively.

“Pastors’ general impressions of the impact of the economy on their churches have noticeably improved since a year ago, but pastors are still five times more likely to be seeing negative effects as positive.”

While giving trends are stabilizing for many congregations, a significant portion still faces serious financial decisions. Faith leaders are reminded to trust God’s provision and encourage generosity among their members.

“One in five churches contracting financially is still a large number who are facing difficult financial decisions.”

Local and national factors, as well as political perspectives, shape how pastors interpret economic trends affecting their ministries.

Let us continue to support our churches through these times, drawing strength from our faith in God’s promises and steadfastness in the face of economic uncertainty.
