Young lives are diminished by leprosy when funding falters and support systems weaken, especially in underserved communities. Scarce resources mean children are denied opportunities for treatment, education, and acceptance, in direct opposition to our calling to uplift the vulnerable.
The Leprosy Mission is raising awareness during World Leprosy Day, urging believers and leaders to stand united for hope and healing. Community outreach and Christ-centered compassion are vital to end both the disease and its devastating stigma.
“The physical damage to young bodies is devastating — nerve damage, disability and pain. But the emotional damage is even deeper,” said Peter Waddup, chief executive of The Leprosy Mission Great Britain.
“Leprosy has become increasingly hidden. Hidden children and hidden suffering. Hidden because governments don’t prioritise it and overstretched health systems cannot keep up.”
“At The Leprosy Mission, we believe every child is created by God, known by name and born to be loved. Where there is suffering, we have a shared responsibility to respond with compassion.”
He added, “In the name of Jesus, we can spare Generation Alpha from leprosy and every generation that follows.”
