Dr. Gina A. Zurlo and Jason Mandryk highlighted the difficulties in defining and counting evangelicals in a recent World Evangelical Alliance webinar. Each points out that understanding the movement’s boundaries and size is vital for grasping Christianity’s global transformation.
“There is no such thing as the evangelical,” Jason Mandryk stated, emphasizing that the term’s meaning shifts by context.
Evangelical distinctives can include core beliefs in Scriptural authority, the cross of Christ, personal conversion, and active faith. These are outlined as the Bebbington Quadrilateral, a framework used for tallying global numbers by Operation World.
Operation World’s research estimates over 700 million evangelicals worldwide, incorporating groups with shared biblical convictions and evangelistic efforts.
The World Christian Database takes a broader approach, grouping evangelical and charismatic believers for a potential total of 937 million. This includes those affiliated with evangelical councils, Pentecostal/charismatic communities, and faith-filled Protestant churches in areas where formal affiliations are impossible.
Dr. Zurlo noted, “We are not God,” explaining that this counting is not a matter of salvation but vital for tracking how global Christianity is changing.
The movement’s boundaries can be complex. For example, some churches in Brazil, Africa, and China show evangelical traits but do not always adopt the label, highlighting how faith can transcend labels and politics.
