Christian citizens and legal advocates in Egypt are urging authorities to officially recognize Easter as a public holiday, so believers may gather with loved ones without fear of work or academic obstacles.
The petition, backed by Alliance Defending Freedom International, highlights the need for Christians to freely observe one of their most sacred days with dignity and respect.
“As a result, many are deprived of the ability to observe their religious rituals and to partake in the celebration with their families in a dignified and meaningful way,” the petitioners said.
Egypt officially recognizes other religious holidays, but Christians still face daily challenges to openly practice their faith amid societal pressures and restrictive laws.
“The lack of serious law enforcement and the unwillingness of local authorities to protect Christians leave them vulnerable to attacks, especially in Upper Egypt. In addition, due to the authoritarian nature of government administration, it is futile for Church leaders or other Christians to speak out against these practices.”
The appeal underscores the ongoing struggle for religious liberty, calling for national recognition that would bring hope, equality, and respect for Christian values in Egypt.
