Pakistan’s new amendments were enacted without broad public consultation, weakening the checks that guard against political misuse and harming the rights of minorities.
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk warned these changes could lead to increased government control over the judiciary, undermining the rule of law.
“Neither the executive nor legislative should be in a position to control or direct the judiciary, and the judiciary should be protected from any form of political influence in its decision-making,” said Turk.
Under the new law, the Federal Constitutional Court now oversees constitutional issues, replacing the Supreme Court’s role, while the processes for selecting judges have been altered, sparking fears of diminished impartiality.
The amendments also grant permanent immunity from prosecution to the president, field marshal, and other top military officials—a move criticized as undermining accountability and justice.
The Pakistani Human Rights Commission echoed these concerns, stressing that these steps erode trust in democracy and could limit citizens’ participation in governance.
