  • St Mungo’s Church in Cumbernauld suffered a devastating fire, believed to be a deliberate act.
  • No one was hurt, but the historic, pyramid-roofed building was reduced to ruins.
  • Church leaders and parishioners are joining together in prayer and hope for the future.

The Right Reverend Rosie Frew, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, visited the ruins of St Mungo’s Church to stand with the congregation in their time of pain.

The church was a distinctive landmark since the 1960s and served not only as a place of worship but also as a hub for community groups, including ministries aiding the needy.

“Time will be needed to grieve, to re-think, to re-imagine, to seek God’s guidance,” Rev Frew told the faithful gathered at the charred remains.

Morag Rusk, Session Clerk of Cumbernauld Trinity Church, reflected on the heartbreak and the church’s deep ties to town life.

“We are absolutely devastated and still coming to terms with it, it is such a well-loved and unique building for the congregation and people in the town.”

Despite their loss, church leaders and members are determined to honor St Mungo’s memory, expressing hope to rebuild and preserve its legacy in the community.

Authorities are appealing for information to assist the investigation and uphold justice.

Let us lift up the congregation in prayer, trusting God to bring peace, comfort, and renewed hope to all those affected by this tragedy.
