  • Two Christian nurses in Pakistan were acquitted of blasphemy after four years.
  • The court found the evidence insufficient to support charges under Section 295-B.
  • The women endured threats and intimidation, requiring special security during their trial.

After four years of trial and tribulation, Christian nurses Mariam Lal and Newosh Arooj have been cleared of all blasphemy charges by a district court in Pakistan. The case, rooted in unsubstantiated claims, forced the women into hiding and denied them their livelihoods due to violent threats.

The charges originated in 2021 when a senior doctor accused the nurses of defiling a sticker with an Islamic inscription at their hospital. News of the accusations led to a near-lynching and both nurses staying in custody for months to safeguard their lives.

The faithful efforts of the National Commission for Justice and Peace, supported by the broader Christian community, provided the legal defense necessary for their eventual acquittal. Their trial highlighted how Pakistan’s blasphemy laws are often misused against religious minorities.

“Our struggle now continues for the secure future, rehabilitation and dignified reintegration of the nurses,” stated Fr. Khalid Rashid Asi, a local advocate.

He credited Bishop Indrias Rehmat and legal advocates for persevering under danger, as well as the international Christian community for its unwavering prayers and support.

Pakistan’s blasphemy laws, designed with severe penalties, are too often used as tools of persecution. Christians and other minorities are disproportionately affected, facing intolerance and injustice for their faith.

To protect freedom and faith, international voices emphasize the urgent need for reform so that no one suffers for their belief in Christ or is oppressed because of their values. May we continue to stand firm for those who face adversity for their faith, and lift every situation in prayer for justice and peace.
