  • The highest court in Santa Catarina ordered a Christian mother, Regiane Cichelero, to enroll her son in an accredited school, affirming steep penalties for her choice to homeschool.
  • Cichelero faced threats of losing custody and fines totaling about $20,000 for continuing to homeschool her 12-year-old son after the pandemic, raising grave concerns about parental rights and religious freedom.
  • Article 26.3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 13.3 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights both safeguard parents’ prerogative to guide their children’s education, a principle rejected by this court decision.

Christian families in Brazil face grave challenges as courts strip parents of their God-given right to direct their children’s education according to their faith.

Regiane Cichelero continued to homeschool her son to align with their Christian values, yet has been met with heavy-handed punishment and legal threats for her convictions.

“It is heartbreaking to be told that I cannot provide my son with the education I know is best for him. The state’s decision not only punishes me with heavy fines but also strip me of the ability to raise my child according to my convictions. No parent should have to fear punishment for choosing the best education for their child.”

This court ruling not only undermines Christian families, it marks a troubling turn away from parental authority and Biblical responsibility in raising our children.

As believers, we must continue to stand for parental rights and uphold our freedom to educate children in faith and truth.
