Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson spoke at Liberty University, emphasizing the unique role of Christian institutions in upholding freedom of conscience and faith. He highlighted the significance of safeguarding the rights that have shaped Western civilization, reminding students of their responsibility to lead with moral courage.
Johnson warned that many liberties cherished in the West are increasingly imperiled and must be actively preserved by the next generation. He referenced the tragic loss of conservative leader Charlie Kirk as a stark example of the threats facing free expression.
“This university is a bastion of freedom — freedom of thought, freedom of conscience, freedom of association, religion, and of course, speech,” he said.
Johnson reflected on his own religious background and the importance of Christian ethics, recognizing the foundational nature of Christ’s teachings.”
“Christianity is a superb ethical system and I would count myself as a kind of very, very bad Christian,” Johnson once shared, further noting Jesus Christ as “the way, the truth and the life.”
He discussed recent global conflicts as evidence of the consequences when foundational freedoms are abandoned. Pointing to the faith-driven leadership of figures like Jerry Falwell and Ronald Reagan, Johnson called for renewed courage in resisting tyranny and advancing liberty.
“We need all the strength and clarity and determination that was shown by Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, and Jerry Falwell, standing up to tyranny because the autocracies of the world are gaining ground every day. And I’m afraid that the West looks ever weaker and more confused.”
Expressing admiration for America’s founding spirit, Johnson cited the country’s historic fight for self-governance as an inspiration behind his role in Brexit, seeking restored sovereignty rooted in freedom and self-determination.
