  • 48% of Americans believe the Bible is not literally true but contains ancient myths.
  • Evangelicals and Southerners remain the most likely to affirm the Bible’s literal truth.
  • Just over half of adults believe God created marriage between one man and one woman.

A growing number of Americans are turning away from believing the Bible is the literal Word of God, according to a 2025 State of Theology report.

This study highlights divisions across beliefs on Scripture’s authority, the nature of God, and traditional Christian morals.

Only 31% of respondents strongly agreed that the Bible is entirely accurate, while 44% expressed disagreement.

Just over half believe God is a perfect being and cannot make a mistake, while others are uncertain about His nature.

“There is one true God in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit,” was strongly affirmed by 55%.

Roughly 48% of adults say Jesus was only a great teacher, not God, displaying a concerning theological divide.

When asked about marriage, 51% strongly agreed it should be between one man and one woman, continuing the defense of Biblical marriage.

Americans are also split on issues of sexuality, gender, and the relevance of biblical teachings, with disagreement on God’s design for marriage and sexual ethics.

These results show the growing need for Christians to defend faith, uphold moral truth, and point their communities to the unwavering authority of Scripture.

Stand firm in your biblical convictions, share the gospel with compassion, and pray that hearts across our nation return to God’s truth.
