Bible Reading Fuels Generosity and Love
Faith Facts
- ABS report reveals strong link between frequent Bible reading and loving, generous actions.
- Scripture engagement leads to higher charitable giving and greater encouragement of pro-social behavior.
- Evangelical Protestants and Black Protestant churches set the standard for generous giving and support for local churches.
Americans who turn to the Bible more often are overwhelmingly more likely to act in love and generosity toward others, according to new nationwide research from the American Bible Society.
The findings, based on a robust survey, underscore that men and women whose lives are built on Scripture are far more likely to volunteer their time, offer their resources, and show Christian hospitality to their neighbors.
“The correlation between Scripture engagement and loving behavior and generosity is undeniable. The more people engage with Scripture, the more likely they are to give of their time, talents, and treasures and to act lovingly toward their neighbors,” said John Plake, Chief Innovation Officer at American Bible Society.
Pro-social questions in the survey included topics such as welcoming immigrants, befriending those of other races or faiths, caring for creation, and standing with the oppressed—each area showing increased support among those deeply rooted in God’s Word.
Charitable donations were notably higher from frequent Bible readers, with the Scripture Engaged donating a median of $2,000, well above those less engaged with the Bible.
In another encouraging sign, practicing Christians who read the Bible regularly were twice as likely to say the Bible inspires generosity in their lives compared to those less engaged with Scripture.
Evangelical Protestants were found to be leading in giving, faithfully supporting their communities and churches, while Black Protestant churches dedicate the majority of their gifts to their local congregations.
Let us take these findings as encouragement to remain steadfast in God’s Word, shining His love through generous deeds and faithful service in our daily walk.
