One of the most profound losses in the Christian life doesn’t appear in the mirror—it happens in the heart. While the passing years may mark our faces with lines and gray hair, a far more troubling transformation often occurs beneath the surface: the gradual fading of wonder from our spiritual lives.

This phenomenon affects even the most devoted followers of Christ. The longer we walk with Jesus, the more vulnerable we become to faith’s most insidious thief: familiarity.

The danger of familiarity lies in its subtlety. When we’ve heard the Christmas story dozens of times, sung “Amazing Grace” hundreds of times, and read the Sermon on the Mount year after year, something precious can slip away unnoticed. The truths that once moved us to tears or filled us with awe can become routine, their edges dulled by repetition rather than sharpened by reflection.

Yet God’s world remains unchanged in its capacity to reveal His glory. Creation still declares the work of His hands. Redemption remains the most astonishing narrative in human history. The cross still stands as the ultimate expression of sacrificial love.

The problem isn’t that these realities have diminished—it’s that our perception of them has. We stop seeing the miraculous in the familiar, the extraordinary in the everyday, the divine fingerprints on ordinary moments.

For the sake of the gospel itself, believers must resist this spiritual erosion. When Christians lose their sense of wonder, they lose one of their most compelling witnesses to a watching world. A faith marked by routine obligation rather than joyful amazement offers little appeal to those seeking something transcendent.

More importantly, our own spiritual vitality depends on maintaining this posture of awe. Wonder keeps our hearts tender toward God. It preserves our capacity for worship, our enthusiasm for Scripture, our delight in prayer, and our awareness of God’s active presence in our daily lives.

The call, then, is to intentionally cultivate what comes naturally to children: the ability to be amazed. To read familiar Bible passages as though encountering them for the first time. To pause at a sunset and truly see the Creator’s artistry. To receive grace as the stunning gift it is, not a theological concept we’ve merely catalogued.

This isn’t about manufactured emotion or forcing feelings we don’t have. It’s about opening our eyes to what has always been true: that we live and move and have our being in a world saturated with the presence of a wonder-working God.

The earth remains full of His glory, whether we notice or not. Our faith flourishes when we choose to notice.
