James Talarico, a candidate for U.S. Senate and Texas state representative, shared his views on faith during a televised interview, claiming that key political issues like abortion and gay marriage are not addressed in the Bible. “Jesus in Matthew 25 tells us exactly how you and I and every one of our fellow believers, how we’re going to be judged and how we’re going to be saved: by feeding the hungry, by healing the sick, by welcoming the stranger,” Talarico stated.
Talarico questioned the priorities of the religious right, asserting that the most important commandments are to love God and neighbor without exception. He argued against what he called ‘Christian nationalism,’ suggesting it misuses faith for political purposes.
His pastor at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church has come under scrutiny for ordaining LGBT clergy and previously labeled Jesus a ‘radical feminist.’ These assertions have raised concerns within faith communities that value biblical authority and traditional doctrine.
