Ukrainian Clergy Bring Hope Amidst War Trauma
Faith Facts
- Bishop Pavlo Honcharuk leads spiritual support in embattled Kharkiv.
- Ministers and chaplains help civilians and soldiers facing war trauma.
- Churches receive increased aid to reach suffering communities.
In Ukraine, Christian leaders are serving faithfully to help people cope with the deep psychological wounds inflicted by war. Bishop Pavlo Honcharuk of Kharkiv has witnessed firsthand how persistent danger and sorrow challenge families and individuals, with faith offering solace and courage in such darkness.
“There are permanently drones and rockets and we hear them above our heads, every day,” Honcharuk shared, highlighting the constant pressures on Ukrainian communities.
The trauma extends beyond soldiers to all who have lost homes, endured violence, or returned from captivity. Ministers strive to provide personalized, compassionate care rooted in the teachings of Christ, addressing the unique pain each person carries.
“We have so much pain in us, but we know we have to live. And this is our life. We live from one day to the other,” he reflected, affirming the perseverance forged by faith.
Even clergy bear the heavy burden of these challenges, yet their steadfast service is vital for family healing and spiritual restoration. With increased international aid, including generators and vehicles, the Church’s presence reaches the most isolated, exemplifying God’s provision in times of distress.
As believers, let us continue to pray and support our fellow brothers and sisters in Ukraine, trusting that God’s love and the hope of the Gospel will triumph where suffering is greatest.

Reviving Jesus’ Quiet Way of Prayer
Faith Facts
- Jesus emphasized silent, contemplative prayer as central in His relationship with the Father.
- Many Christians remain unfamiliar with the deep tradition of meditative prayer within Christianity.
- Despite fewer identifying with church institutions, there is a growing spiritual hunger for deeper connection with God.
Christian meditation, marked by silence and contemplation, was a key part of Jesus’ own prayer life and remains essential for believers seeking depth in their faith.
Many have not been taught this practice, but it offers a powerful way to draw closer to God’s heart.
Large numbers of believers, especially the young, are rediscovering the peace found in quiet prayer, longing for a faith experience deeper than words.
Jesus Himself taught
“When you pray, go into your inner room, shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret.”
While church institutions face challenges, the thirst for genuine spiritual encounter endures and even grows, especially following societal upheavals.
Churches are called to remember and share the rich contemplative traditions at the heart of Christianity, rather than relying only on modern marketing or noise.
The early church’s wisdom in silent communion led many to a closer experience of God.
Today, online gatherings inspired by the ancients are bringing Christians and seekers alike into deeper prayer and fellowship.
“Most people, most Christians, have absolutely no idea that Christianity has anything to say about this, much less that it has its own vibrant contemplative tradition,”
says Martin Laird.
Let us return to our Christian roots, nurturing a quieter and more profound faith through silent prayer and trust in God’s presence.
May our hearts be still and open to hear His voice anew.

Bishop Upholds Faith as Isle of Man Debates Vote
Faith Facts
- The Isle of Man’s Tynwald is advancing a bill that would let the Bishop of Sodor and Man keep her seat but end her right to vote.
- Bishop Tricia Hillas warned this change undermines democracy and the church’s role in society.
- Despite these challenges, the Bishop affirms the church’s mission remains rooted in Christ and service.
The Isle of Man faces a significant change as lawmakers consider ending the bishop’s right to vote, though the seat is preserved. This shift reflects a move toward elected representation in government, sparking concerns about faith’s place in public life.
Bishop Tricia Hillas addressed the legislature, cautioning that removing voting rights weakens both democratic principles and the accountability of Christian voices. She emphasized that the heritage and spiritual identity of the diocese are deeply affected by this decision.
“The bill argues for the retention of the bishop’s seat but to remove the vote. However, when contributions are separated from responsibility and accountability, democracy is undermined, and contribution simply becomes commentary.”
In her pastoral letter, Bishop Hillas called for prayer, expressing assurance that Christian confidence remains in God, not in political arrangements. She encouraged the faithful to trust God’s guidance and purpose during these uncertain times.
“Our confidence does not rest in constitutional arrangements, roles, or votes, but in the faithfulness of God who has guided His people through every age.”
The Bishop reaffirmed the church’s commitment to proclaiming God’s kingdom, seeking justice, sharing mercy, and serving the island community no matter the political outcome. She reminded believers that their mission is unchanged, anchored in Christ, and persevering through the trials of the present age.
