The Chapter decided to pause all choir activities for a month, attributing the change to an incident where the choir performed a disputed piece and then left the service.
“Chapter took the decision to pause all choir activity for an initial period of one month, with immediate effect whilst we review what happened and consider appropriate next steps. This pause will also provide an opportunity for dialogue between the Chapter and Choir.”
A congregation member argued that the choir’s actions were a peaceful protest against potential layoffs due to the cathedral’s financial hardships.
The Chapter revealed that without major changes, Bangor Cathedral faces a possible £300,000 deficit by year’s end, placing its future in jeopardy.
Leadership has suggested reducing choir staff and hours in an effort to prevent bankruptcy, sparking concerns about the choir’s long-term viability.
An ongoing petition, signed by over 1,600 individuals, claims the choir is not to blame for the financial troubles and offers alternative solutions.
