Faithful Milestones Mark Christian History This Week

Faith Facts

  • Willow Creek Community Church held its first service this week in 1975, becoming one of America’s largest evangelical congregations.
  • The Knights Templar were arrested on October 13, 1307, in a campaign that dismantled their order across Europe.
  • Missionary Henry Martyn died on October 16, 1812, after translating the New Testament into Persian and Urdu.

Believers across the nation pause this week to remember three defining moments that shaped the witness of the church. Each event stands as a reminder that God works through both triumph and trial to advance His kingdom.

Willow Creek Community Church opened its doors for the first time in 1975. The fledgling congregation gathered in a movie theater with a heart to reach the unchurched of suburban Chicago.

“We wanted to create a place where people could come as they are and encounter the living Christ,”

founder Bill Hybels later reflected. The church grew into a model for seeker-sensitive ministry that influenced thousands of congregations worldwide.

Centuries earlier, on October 13, 1307, King Philip IV of France ordered the arrest of the Knights Templar. The surprise raids brought an abrupt end to the military order that had protected pilgrims and defended the faith during the Crusades.

“The Templars stood as a bulwark for Christendom,”

historians note, yet political and financial motives drove their sudden downfall.

Just over five hundred years later, missionary Henry Martyn breathed his last on October 16, 1812, in Armenia. At only thirty-one, the Cambridge scholar had already translated the New Testament into Persian and Urdu while serving in India and Persia.

“I have found the pearl of great price,”

Martyn wrote in his journal, “and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ.”

These anniversaries call today’s church to renewed faithfulness in worship, courage in the face of opposition, and zeal for the spread of the gospel.

Pro-life unity remains essential for protecting every child

Faith Facts

  • The sanctity of life is rooted in the truth that every child is created in the image of God
  • Scripture calls believers to defend the defenseless regardless of circumstances
  • Christian teaching holds that life begins at conception and must be protected at every stage

A preborn child’s right to live should never depend on whether that child is wanted in the moment.

Internal divisions among pro-life advocates only serve to weaken the movement’s ability to protect innocent life. When energy is spent on disagreements rather than unified action, the most vulnerable suffer the consequences.

“A preborn child’s right to live should never depend on whether that child is wanted in the moment.”

Strong families and strong communities are built on the conviction that every life has inherent value. This conviction aligns with the biblical mandate to love our neighbor and to stand for truth even when it is unpopular.

  • Nidal Hasan was convicted of murdering 13 people and wounding more than 30 others in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting.
  • The Department of Defense has announced that Hasan will be executed by firing squad via public livestream.
  • Prominent Christian leaders including Franklin Graham and Robert Jeffress have publicly responded to the decision.

Christian leaders across the nation are voicing their reactions to the Defense Department’s announcement that convicted Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan will face execution by firing squad in a public livestream.

The announcement has reignited debate over justice, punishment, and the moral questions surrounding capital punishment in a nation founded on Judeo-Christian principles.

“The Bible teaches that the government has the authority to bear the sword for justice,” Franklin Graham stated. “This man took innocent lives in an act of terror, and the consequences must be carried out.”

“We must always seek justice while remembering mercy belongs to God alone,” Robert Jeffress added. “The families of the victims have waited years for this moment, and the rule of law must be upheld.”
