Nicaraguan Believers Face Escalating Threats to Religious Liberty

Religious freedom continues to crumble in Nicaragua as the Ortega regime intensifies its crackdown on believers and church leaders. Recent reports indicate a sharp rise in documented violations, jumping from 222 cases in 2024 to 309 cases just one year later.
A pervasive climate of fear has silenced many, with church activities heavily policed and international visitors reportedly blocked from bringing Bibles into the country. These actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the spiritual liberty afforded to all by God.
Anna Lee Stangl, Director of Advocacy at CSW, warned that the regime’s strategy focuses on total control over independent voices.
“Its primary goal remains the same: to control, coopt or eliminate anyone it deems a threat to its authority and survival.”
